A garbage disposal is not the same as a trash can in your kitchen. A garbage disposal is intended to handle the tiny bits and pieces of trash that we cannot scrape completely away in the trash can. You can wash them off your plate into the disposal and break them down further.
It's really a matter of preference. People who do a lot of dishes should have one. Garbage disposals aren't necessary if you don't do a lot of dishes in the sink. If, however, a large piece of food somehow gets down the drain, it can clog up much sooner.
